On Our Doorstep: Great Exhibition Road Festival

The street outside our museums turns into a festival. Imperial College, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, V&A South Kensington and the Royal Albert Hall co-host two days of free hands-on science and arts activities. 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of the original Great Exhibition of 1851, so expect a larger programme than usual — including, for the first time, a Family Fun Zone inside Kensington Gardens. From the hotel it's a five-minute walk straight up Exhibition Road.
The Same Weekend: London Open Gardens

Over 120 normally-private gardens across 12 London boroughs unlock their gates for one weekend, including many of the leafy garden squares in Kensington, Chelsea and Notting Hill. If you only have time for one cluster, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea squares are the densest concentration and the easiest to walk between.

- Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art — runs until Sunday 8 November 2026. A 200-object retrospective of Elsa Schiaparelli, the surrealist designer who collaborated with Dalí and Cocteau and rewrote the rules of haute couture. Likely the V&A's defining ticket of the summer.
- Rising Voices: Contemporary Art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific — runs until 10 January 2027. A landmark partnership with Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane bringing contemporary Asia-Pacific practice to South Kensington.
Natural History Museum

- Our Story with David Attenborough — extended to 30 August 2026. A 50-minute immersive cinematic experience in the Jerwood Gallery, narrated by Sir David. Tickets do sell out in summer; book in advance.

Science Museum

- Wonderlab — the museum's flagship interactive gallery for curious 7–14 year-olds; ticketed.
Kensington Palace and Gardens

Heads up: the Queen's State Apartments will close from 15 June 2026 for major conservation and re-presentation work (source). The Victoria rooms and the Princess Diana wing remain open. If those apartments are on your list, aim for the first half of June.

Pride in London

The parade route starts at Hyde Park Corner — just east of Kensington — and runs through Piccadilly, Regent Street and Oxford Street to Whitehall. The main stage at Trafalgar Square is free. The surrounding Pride weekend programme runs 2–6 July.

Europe's biggest street festival hits a milestone in 2026 — 60 years since the first Carnival in 1966. The full schedule:
- Saturday 29 August — UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition, ticketed, Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, 18:00–23:00
- Sunday 30 August — Family Day / Children's Day Parade, free, from 10:30
- Monday 31 August — Adults' Day / Main Parade, free, 10:30–20:30
Practical note for guests: the parade footprint is in W11, not Kensington's W8. Cromwell Road and the hotel area remain easy to reach, but the Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park tube stations have temporary entry/exit changes during Carnival — High Street Kensington and Earl's Court are quieter alternatives. If you're not attending Carnival, the South Kensington museums and the V&A are noticeably less busy on the Bank Holiday Monday.
