What to do in South Kensington: the three museums and which door to use
Visit the Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Science Museum: all free, all 9 to 15 minutes on foot from the hotel. Use the NHM's Queen's Gate (West) entrance, the V&A's Cromwell Road entrance and the Science Museum's Main Entrance on Exhibition Road. On a single day we'd pick two, not three.
1. Natural History Museum
Walk: 9 min (649 m) to the Queen's Gate (West) entrance; 12 min (883 m) to the Central Entrance · Hours: daily 10:00–17:50, last entry 17:30
The Natural History Museum (Cromwell Road, SW7 5BD) is the nearest museum to the hotel and the one we'd start with. Its galleries are free, though some exhibitions charge; a free entry ticket guarantees entry at weekends and in school holidays, and bags may be searched.
The Queen's Gate entrance is step-free with a ramp and open until 17:00, per the NHM's getting here page. After 17:00, use the Central Entrance on Cromwell Road, through the East Gate (step-free by a steep ramp). The Creepy Crawlies gallery is closed until it reopens as a family gallery, date not given, and the Cocoon may close at short notice (NHM facilities).

2. V&A South Kensington
Walk: 14 min (1,014 m) to the Cromwell Road entrance · Hours: daily 10:00–17:45, Fridays until 22:00
V&A South Kensington (SW7 2RL) says general admission "is free and you don't need to book". It's the only one of the three museums open into the evening, until 22:00 on Fridays, though some galleries close after 17:45.
Avoid Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October 2026: industrial action means only Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art, the café and some ground-floor galleries will open. The pond is shut until further notice because of the hosepipe ban, and the Korea Gallery is closed until December 2026. More on our V&A visitor page.
3. Science Museum
Walk: 15 min (1,069 m) to the Main Entrance on Exhibition Road · Hours: daily 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:15; from 09:00 in half-term, 24–30 October 2026
Unlike its neighbours, the Science Museum (SW7 2DD) needs a pre-booked free ticket, so book before you leave the hotel. The paid part is Wonderlab on Level 3: day passes from £13.50, cheaper booked a day ahead, free for ages 3 and under.
The museum is closed all day on Wednesday 11 November 2026 and closes at 17:00 on Thursday 26 November; the Flight gallery is shut on Thursday 19 November.
What to see in Kensington: the Royal Albert Hall, the Albert Memorial and the palace
North of the museums, the Royal Albert Hall, the Albert Memorial and Kensington Palace are 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the hotel. The memorial is free. For the Hall and the palace, check prices and opening times on their own sites before you go.
4. Royal Albert Hall
Walk: 15–16 min (1,172 m), east along Cromwell Road and north up Queen's Gate
The walk to the Royal Albert Hall is all on streets, so park closing times never affect the walk home after a show. The Hall also runs guided tours; check tour times and prices on its site before you go. Our concierge, available 24/7, can help arrange tickets and tours. If a concert is why you're travelling, read our page on staying for a Royal Albert Hall show.
5. Albert Memorial
Walk: 19 min (1,436 m), up Queen's Gate to the park gate of the same name
The Albert Memorial (officially the Prince Consort National Memorial) stands in Kensington Gardens on Albert Memorial Road, opposite the Royal Albert Hall. The Royal Parks' monuments page describes Prince Albert holding the Great Exhibition catalogue above a frieze of 187 carved figures.
It keeps park hours: Kensington Gardens closes at 17:00 until 1 November 2026, then 16:30 from 2 November to 31 December, per The Royal Parks' 2026 table. So see it before a show at the Hall, not after. Our guide to Kensington Gardens opening times has the full year.
6. Kensington Palace
Walk: 20 min (1,425 m)
Kensington Palace is the ticketed stop in Kensington Gardens. Check this winter's opening days and prices on Historic Royal Palaces' Kensington Palace visit page before you go. Our guide to Kensington Palace tickets and tours covers how the visit works and who lives there.
Parks and gardens: Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park
Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are both free, run by The Royal Parks, a charity that keeps its parks "free, beautiful and accessible for everyone". Kensington Gardens opens at 06:00 and closes at dusk; Hyde Park's gates open at 05:00 and close at midnight. The three stops below are in Kensington Gardens, so go in daylight.
7. Serpentine South Gallery
Walk: 25 min (1,820 m) · Hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays
Serpentine South (W2 3XA) is a free contemporary art gallery; booking is advised. Until 10 January 2027 it shows Justin Caguiat: Change Ringing, and Serpentine North on West Carriage Drive has Amar Kanwar until 31 January 2027. The gallery stays open until 18:00 but the park around it closes earlier, so we'd go in the early afternoon.
8. Diana Memorial Playground
Walk: 25 min (1,817 m) · Hours: from 10:00; closes 16:45 in late October, 15:45 from November to January; last entry 15 minutes before
The Diana Memorial Playground is free. Only adults supervising children up to the age of 12 are let in; adults on their own may enter only from 09:30 to 10:00. The waterplay is switched off because of the hosepipe ban, and in November last entry is 15:30.
9. Peter Pan statue
Walk: about 29 min
The bronze Peter Pan stands to the west of the Long Water, surrounded by squirrels, rabbits, mice and fairies. At 29 minutes it's the furthest park stop on this list, which makes it the turning point of a loop: the Albert Memorial first, then Peter Pan, then out before the gates close.
Further west: Kensington High Street and Holland Park
The Design Museum, Leighton House and Holland Park are 24 to 32 minutes on foot. We'd walk: High Street Kensington is one Circle line stop from Gloucester Road, but Gloucester Road has no step-free access, so with a pushchair or wheelchair the pavement is easier.
10. Design Museum
Walk: 24 min (1,779 m) to 224–238 Kensington High Street · Hours: Monday–Thursday 10:00–17:00, Friday–Sunday 10:00–18:00
The Design Museum's permanent display, Designer Maker User, is free on Level 2. At weekends it's the latest-closing stop on this side of town. It's closed 24–26 December 2026.
11. Leighton House
Walk: 27 min (1,959 m) to 12 Holland Park Road · Hours: Wednesday–Monday 10:00–17:30, closed Tuesdays, last entry 16:30
Leighton House charges for entry: £14 for adults, £10 concessions, £6 for ages 6–18. A private event closes it on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November 2026 (Sambourne House stays open). On the first Monday of each month, 10:00–13:00, entry is Pay What You Want, at the door only and not on bank holidays.
12. Holland Park and the Kyoto Garden
Walk: about 32 min, west along Cromwell Road and north up Earl's Court Road · Hours: 07:30 to around dusk
Holland Park is free, Kyoto Garden included: a Japanese garden donated by the Chamber of Commerce of Kyoto in 1991. RBKC says some gates may close up to 20 minutes before the closing time posted at the entrances, so head out half an hour before sunset. Dogs aren't allowed in the Japanese garden, and the under-5s play area is closed until the end of November 2026. More in our guide to Holland Park and the Kyoto Garden.
Things to do near Kensington, further afield (walks not measured): Portobello Road Market is busiest on Saturday, the only day its antiques arcades open, and the Notting Hill film locations are in the same neighbourhood.
Seasonal: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland runs in Hyde Park from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day, and its Green Gate is 30–35 minutes on foot from the hotel.
13. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
Walk: 30–35 min (1.6 miles, 2.6 km) to Green Gate · Hours: usually 10:00–22:00
Everyone needs a pre-booked, timed ticket: Off-Peak free, Standard £5.50, Peak £8.25, booking fees included, and every Monday to Thursday in November is Off-Peak. One online transaction of £25 or more makes entry free. Some weekdays open later (12:00 on 19 and 20 November). We'd book a Monday-to-Thursday slot in November: it costs nothing.
Kensington Gardens is shut by the time you leave, so walk home by the streets; our Winter Wonderland walking guide has the route. For a park-side trip, see staying near Hyde Park.
Free things to do in Kensington
Nine of the 13 numbered places cost nothing to enter, and Winter Wonderland's Off-Peak slots are free too, so a full day here can cost nothing beyond lunch.

How to spend a day in Kensington
Have breakfast at the hotel from 06:30 (07:00 at weekends), be at the NHM's Queen's Gate entrance for 10:00, take the V&A or the Science Museum after lunch, reach the Albert Memorial before Kensington Gardens closes, and finish at the Royal Albert Hall or, on a Friday, the V&A.

| Evening | Royal Albert Hall, or the V&A on a Friday | 15–16 or 14 min | V&A open until 22:00 on Fridays |
We've only measured walks from the hotel door, so the table gives those. Breakfast details are on our breakfast hours page, and our guide to South Kensington restaurants has 14 lunch and dinner options 5 to 20 minutes on foot from the hotel.
On the day you leave, check out by 12:00, leave your bags with us free, and fit in the museum you missed: the NHM's last entry is 17:30. Arriving instead? Check-in is from 15:00, so a Friday at the V&A makes an easy first evening.
Things to do in Kensington at night
After dark, Kensington comes down to a Royal Albert Hall show, the V&A until 22:00 on Fridays, and Winter Wonderland until 22:00 from 19 November 2026. Kensington Gardens shuts at dusk, so every evening route home is a street route.
- V&A Fridays: open until 22:00 every Friday. Friday Late events run on selected Fridays, usually late in the month; the V&A says to ask staff for dates. Skip Friday 30 October 2026, an industrial-action day.
- Royal Albert Hall: 15–16 minutes each way along Cromwell Road and Queen's Gate. Check the Hall's own listings.
- Back at the hotel: room service runs 24 hours, and the concierge is available 24/7.
What to do in Kensington when it rains
Go to the museums: the NHM, the V&A and the Science Museum are free, indoors and 9 to 15 minutes' walk from the hotel. Start at the NHM, add the V&A, and book the Science Museum's free ticket that morning for a third. Further west, the Design Museum (24 minutes) is the free indoor option and Leighton House (27 minutes, closed Tuesdays) the paid one. In a downpour, Gloucester Road station is 270 m, about 3 minutes from the lobby.
Things to do in Kensington with kids
Build a family day around the NHM, the Science Museum's Wonderlab and the Diana Memorial Playground (entries 1, 3 and 8), keeping in mind that the playground closes at 15:45 from November and Holland Park's under-5s play area is shut until the end of November 2026.
- Wonderlab family pass: for 3–5 people with no more than 2 adults, it takes £3 off each day pass.
- Serpentine boating: in November the Boathouse opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to dusk, weather permitting. An hour costs £6.95 for ages 3–15 (£5.55 off-peak, 10:00–12:00) and £13.95 for adults (£9.50), per The Royal Parks Sports & Leisure. We haven't measured the walk.
- Pushchairs: Gloucester Road and South Kensington aren't step-free from street to platform (TfL Step-free Tube guide, October 2026), so walk, and use the NHM's ramped Queen's Gate entrance. Some NHM lifts, in the Darwin Centre and the Mammals Hall, are out of order.
- Where you sleep: our Family Room sleeps up to four in 32 m² (one king and two singles, or two queens), with a cot on request and breakfast for the whole family included. Breakfast has high chairs.
FAQs
How do you spend a day in Kensington?
Start at the Natural History Museum at 10:00, 9 minutes from the hotel. Do the V&A or the Science Museum after lunch, see the Albert Memorial before Kensington Gardens closes (16:30 from 2 November 2026), and end at the Royal Albert Hall.
What can you do in Kensington for free?
The three South Kensington museums (the Science Museum with a pre-booked free ticket), Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, the Serpentine galleries, the Diana Memorial Playground, Holland Park's Kyoto Garden and the Design Museum's permanent display are all free.
Is Kensington Gardens in Hyde Park?
No. They're two separate Royal Parks side by side, with different hours: Kensington Gardens closes at dusk (16:30 from 2 November to 31 December 2026), while Hyde Park's gates stay open until midnight. Both are free.
Is Kensington Palace worth visiting?
Yes, if royal history is why you're in London, and it's 20 minutes on foot from the hotel. On a short trip we'd do the free museums first and give the palace its own morning. Check Historic Royal Palaces' site for this winter's opening days and prices before you go.
What zone is Kensington?
Zone 1. Gloucester Road (270 m, about 3 minutes from the hotel) and South Kensington (about 11 minutes on foot) are both Zone 1 stations on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines. Our South Kensington station guide covers this autumn's line closures.
Where should you eat in South Kensington?
Our South Kensington restaurants guide lists 14 restaurants 5 to 20 minutes on foot from the hotel, each checked on its own website, with a section on eating before a Royal Albert Hall show.
Should you walk or take the tube around Kensington?
Walk. Every numbered place here is 9 to 35 minutes from 97 Cromwell Road, the three museums are 15 minutes or less, and neither Gloucester Road nor South Kensington is step-free from the street. Keep the tube for heavy rain.
Choose the Natural History Museum if you have one morning, the V&A if your free time is a Friday evening, and Holland Park's Kyoto Garden once the museums are done. Then book direct with IHG for the nights around your concert, museum weekend or Winter Wonderland slot.
