5–20 min walk to all 14 restaurants

October 2026: Bibendum and its Oyster Bar at Michelin House closed in August 2025, and Launceston Place has gone too, so none of them is on this list.

Hours, prices and booking rules checked on each restaurant's own site on 11 October 2026. Prices are samples from current menus.

How we picked

We started from the restaurants that South Kensington guides and Google's local results name, then kept only the ones we could check on their own websites: address, opening hours, a current menu price and how to book. Eleven candidates came off the list, four of them because they've closed. Bibendum is NOT open: the Michelin House restaurant on Fulham Road closed in August 2025.

Every walk was measured on OpenStreetMap's walking router on 11 October 2026 from 97 Cromwell Road and rounded up to the next minute. Where the hotel's Cromwell Road front and its Ashburn Place side gave different times, we quote the longer one. The list runs in order of that walk, shortest first, so the numbers are distances, not a ranking.

Pizza and breakfast places aren't here. They have their own guides: the best pizza near the hotel and breakfast and brunch in Kensington.

What to order

The three-course set menu is £49.50, or £70 with two glasses of the sommelier's wine. It's served Monday to Saturday from 12:15 to 13:45, and early in the evening (18:00–18:45 Monday to Thursday, 18:00–18:30 Friday and Saturday). The tasting menu is £120, or £185 with wine.

Good to know

There's an optional £2 cover and a 15% discretionary gratuity. At 23 minutes from the Royal Albert Hall, it's a dinner in its own right, not a pre-show meal. Book on kitchenw8.com.

Where to eat before a Royal Albert Hall show

For a 19:30 start, the Hall opens its doors at 18:45, 45 minutes before the performance. That gives a pre-show dinner a hard stop. The two nearest picks are 6 minutes from the Hall on foot: Ognisko and The Queen's Arms.

Restaurant Walk to the Royal Albert Hall Why it works before a show
Ognisko 6 min Sit-down Polish dinner; book for 17:30
The Queen's Arms 6 min Pub food all day; sandwiches until 17:00 on weekdays
Thai Square 12 min Early Bird until 18:30, 2 courses £23
Comptoir Libanais 12 min Keeps space for walk-ins; open until 22:00 (Sunday 21:00)
Zaika of Kensington 12 min Dinner from 17:30
Daquise 13 min Reopens at 17:00
Brother Marcus 14 min Pre-show menu £25, weekdays 16:00–18:00

The other option is to eat at the Hall itself. Its restaurants and bars include The Elgar Room (South Indian), Coda (seasonal French) and Verdi Italian Kitchen, which has a children's menu. The Hall says most of them open two hours before the start; Verdi opens from midday Tuesday to Sunday. They take deposits, and the Hall recommends booking ahead.

From the hotel, the Hall itself is a 16-minute walk: east along Cromwell Road and up Queen's Gate. For what's on there and at the museums this season, see our Kensington events guide.

If your show ends around 22:00, most kitchens on this list will have taken last orders. Yashin Ocean House takes dinner orders until 22:30 (Monday to Saturday) and Daquise is open until 23:00. Otherwise, the walk back to the hotel is the same 16 minutes, and The Forum Bar is open until 01:00.

Where to eat near the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is open every day from 10:00 to 17:50, with last entry at 17:30. From the hotel, the nearest door is the West Entrance on Queen's Gate, a 9-minute walk, but it closes at 17:00. The main Cromwell Road entrance is reached through the East Gate, on the corner of Exhibition Road, 12 minutes from the hotel. The museum's own cafés don't take bookings. If you're planning a museum trip, our Natural History Museum stay guide has the walks to every entrance and the family room.

Measured to that East Gate, the nearest restaurants on this list are 2 to 6 minutes away:

  • Thai Square: 2 min, children's menu
  • Comptoir Libanais: 2 min, children's section, walk-ins welcome
  • Daquise: 3 min, reopens for dinner at 17:00
  • Brother Marcus: 4 min, children's menu and high chairs
  • Pravaas: 6 min, lunch until 15:00 on weekdays
  • CERU: 6 min, almost all gluten-free

Diners at the outdoor tables of Comptoir Libanais on Exhibition Road, South Kensington

The museum lists six places to eat, including the T. rex Restaurant, which serves pizza and children's meals from 11:00, and a lower-ground picnic area. See its eat, drink and shop page for the list. The V&A is on the same stretch of Cromwell Road, 14 minutes from the hotel, so the same restaurants work after either museum.

Restaurants near Gloucester Road, closest to the hotel

Gloucester Road is the next street east of the hotel. The station is 270 metres from the lobby, and three of the picks are within 6 minutes.

  • Comptoir Libanais Gloucester Road, 77A Gloucester Road, SW7 4SS: 4 min (224 m). Open Monday 10:30–21:30, Tuesday to Friday 10:30–22:00, Saturday 10:30–22:30, Sunday 10:30–21:00.
  • Bombay Brasserie, Courtfield Road: 5 min (304 m), closed on Mondays.
  • The Hereford Arms, 127 Gloucester Road: 6 min (445 m), food until 22:00.
  • Yashin Ocean House, Old Brompton Road: 10 min (676 m).

FAQs

Where should I eat in South Kensington?

For dinner near the hotel, Bombay Brasserie is 5 minutes away on Courtfield Road. Near the museums, Thai Square, Comptoir Libanais, Daquise and Brother Marcus are 2 to 4 minutes from the Natural History Museum's East Gate. For a special occasion, Kitchen W8 has one Michelin star and a £49.50 set menu.

What are the most popular restaurants in South Kensington?

We don't rank by popularity. In October 2026, Google's local results for "south kensington restaurants" showed Brother Marcus, Da Mario and CERU first. Brother Marcus and CERU are on this list. Da Mario isn't, because its own site doesn't publish its hours or prices.

Where can I eat before a concert at the Royal Albert Hall?

Ognisko and The Queen's Arms are each a 6-minute walk from the Hall. Doors open 45 minutes before the start, so book for 17:30 for a 19:30 show. Brother Marcus has a £25 pre-show menu on weekdays from 16:00 to 18:00, and the Hall's own restaurants open about two hours before the start.

Which restaurants are closest to the Natural History Museum?

Thai Square and Comptoir Libanais are 2 minutes on foot from the museum's East Gate, on the corner of Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road, which leads to the main entrance. Daquise is 3 minutes away and Brother Marcus 4.

Which South Kensington restaurants are good for families?

Brother Marcus has a children's menu and high chairs, and Comptoir Libanais and Thai Square both have children's menus. The Hereford Arms lists families as welcome and has a kids' menu. The Anglesea Arms is over-21s only.

Do I need to book?

All 14 take bookings. Comptoir Libanais keeps space for walk-ins, and Brother Marcus's weekend brunch is walk-in only at South Kensington. Daquise charges a £10 a head deposit for groups of six or more.

Is Bibendum still open?

No. Bibendum, the restaurant in Michelin House on Fulham Road, closed in August 2025, and the Bibendum Oyster Bar closed at the end of that month. Older South Kensington guides still list it.

Which South Kensington restaurant should you book?

If you only book one, make it Ognisko on a concert night: it's 6 minutes from the Royal Albert Hall, and nothing else on this list is closer to the Hall with a full dinner menu. On any other night, the walk matters less than the food, so choose by cuisine:

  • Choose Bombay Brasserie if you want a big dinner and a 5-minute walk home.
  • Choose CERU if someone at the table eats gluten-free or vegan.
  • Choose Kitchen W8 if it's a celebration and you'll walk 20 minutes for a Michelin star.

If the day runs late, the hotel's own restaurant, Ashburn S.W.7, serves dinner from 18:00, and room service runs 24 hours.
